what they say

about

The byline says it all really – increasing bibliodiversity.

There has never been such sheer quantity of talent producing SF and fantasy.

Mutation is about giving that talent another market.

This isn't because the existing magazines and small presses aren't doing a great job of printing quality stuff. It's simply that the more markets there are -- each with its own taste (peculiar /quirky/perverse/ cool/ offensive/ delightful -- delete as you see fit...) -- then the greater the range of stories that will see the light of day. And the greater the scope for individual writers to try something different.

Therefore Mutation. And the first book, Music For Another World -- an anthology selected from an open call for submissions.

Mutation values work that is humourous, or grim, or character driven, or ideas led, or completely off-the-wall, or daringly traditional – or even all of these at once. The consistent factors will be publishing SF/ Fantasy, and (I hope) publishing work of good quality.

Production is going to be of the scale you'd expect from an operation consisting of one man and a cat. (Actually it's two cats but they're both part time.) But one micro-press is better than none.

As for readers... Well, we all have our own secret template of the ultimate story. But no one, including you, knows what it looks like. The only reader rights that Mutation recognises are the right not to be bored, and the right not to have her intelligence insulted. After that, its down to the thrill of the chase.
